A fire was reported at a Buddhist monastery named U Chit San (Rakhine) Ramu Buddhist Temple in Ramu Sadar upazila of Cox’s Bazar early on Saturday.

However, there was no major damage as locals and the fire service immediately brought the flames under control.

Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Mahfuzul Islam confirmed the matter.

The SP said, “A police team as well as the deputy commissioner visited the spot. However, it is not yet possible to say whether it was an act of sabotage or not. The police are investigating the matter.”

He further said, “Security has been increased in the area. We will share more information after the investigation.”

Bangladesh Buddhist Federation has issued a statement condemning the incident. The petitioners demanded the arrest and punishment of communal terrorists. Besides, they demanded the security of Buddhist temple and their residences.

It is metioned that in 2012, there was a communal attack on Ramur Buddhist monastery and Buddhist community settlement in Cox’s Bazar. In this incident, miscreants created a big crack in the secular spirit of hundred years. After 12 years of this incident, ‘miscreants’ tried to set fire to the Buddhist monastery again.
