Seven people have been arrested in connection with the attack on Ashraful Alom, better known as Hero Alom, while the independent candidate was leaving a polling centre in Banani during the Dhaka-17 parliamentary by-election.
Sujan Rahman Shuvo, Hero Alom’s personal assistant, filed the case with Banani Police Station.
The arrestees are: Sanwar Kazi, 28, Biplob Hossain, 31, Mahmud Hasan Mehedi, 27, Mozahid Khan, 27, Ashique Sarker, 27, Ridoy Sheikh, 24 and Sohel Mollah, 25.
Police are reviewing video footage of the incident to identify the other assailants, according to Additional Commissioner Harunor Rashid.
He said, legal action will also be taken in this regard and any neglect of duty on the police’s part will also be reviewed.
Awami League also condemned this attack and requested for legal action against those involved. Even if they are party workers, organisational action will be taken by the party.
