Govt frames 5-year roadmap to boost sugar production: Industries Minister

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun has said the government has formulated a five-year roadmap for increasing sugar production.

“A five-year roadmap has been prepared for increasing sugar production,”  he said on Sunday while responding to a star-marked question raised by treasury bench lawmaker Nur Uddin Chowdhury Nayan of Laxmipur-2 during the question-answer session at the Jatiya Sangsad with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

In addition to this, he said plans are underway to modernise all the age-old sugar mills for the production and marketing of huge amounts of sugar.

To materialise the programme, Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) has undertaken a review project titled the Balancing, Modernisation and Replacement (BMR) of Carew and Company (Bangladesh) Limited.

To turn the north Bengal sugar mill into a profitable one, approval of a proposal for a feasibility study is now underway through modernising and diversifying the production.

The approval of the project proposal for a feasibility study on the modernisation of Thakurgaon Sugar Mill, production diversification, and installation of a beet sugar plant is now underway.
