DMP plans harnessing AI for traffic control

by The Bangla Herald

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is set to revolutionise traffic control in the bustling capital with the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

At a press conference held at the DMP headquarters on Sunday (May 5), Joint Police Commissioner SM Mehdi Hasan outlined plans to utilise AI for traffic management, aiming to alleviate the strain on the traffic department caused by burgeoning demand.

Commissioner Hasan disclosed that AI is already in use for traffic control in Gulshan, managed under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Building on this success, the DMP envisions extending AI-driven traffic control to other areas of Dhaka, including Gulshan.

The ongoing programme signals a futuristic approach towards streamlining traffic flow and ensuring road safety in the metropolitan area.

“This is part of our office work,” Commissioner Hasan remarked, emphasising the proactive stance of the DMP towards embracing technological advancements.

The initiative underscores a concerted effort to address pressing issues such as unfit vehicles and unauthorised parking, which contribute to traffic congestion and safety hazards.

Commissioner Hasan further highlighted the DMP’s crackdown on unauthorised stickers proliferating on vehicles across Dhaka. These stickers, often bearing the insignia of government offices, police, or journalists’ organisations, have been misused by individuals for various illicit activities.

The DMP has taken decisive legal action against vehicles adorned with such unauthorised stickers, prioritising public safety and enforcing adherence to regulations.

Talking about concerns about insufficient parking facilities in Dhaka, Commissioner Hasan underscored the importance of designated parking areas and urged citizens to adhere to regulations regarding parking and passenger pick-up points.

The DMP remains vigilant in issuing fines and legal proceedings against violators to ensure orderly traffic management.

Regarding the issue of battery-operated rickshaws, Commissioner Hasan affirmed the DMP’s commitment to addressing this concern through legal action and vehicle disposal measures. Over 2,000 battery-operated rickshaws have already been removed from the streets as part of this initiative.

In a coordinated effort involving eight traffic departments, the DMP is intensifying its campaign against vehicles displaying illegal stickers. Commissioner Hasan urged the public to refrain from using unauthorised stickers, emphasising that stringent legal action would be taken against violators.

The DMP’s adoption of AI technology for traffic control and its crackdown on unauthorised stickers reflect a proactive approach towards enhancing road safety and ensuring compliance with regulations in Dhaka. With continued efforts and public cooperation, the DMP endeavours to create a more efficient and orderly traffic environment for all residents and commuters of the capital city.
