PM Hasina buys ticket, takes train ride over Padma Bridge

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has crossed the Padma Bridge by train after buying a ticket herself.

She bought a train ticket from Mawa Railway Station at 12:55pm on Tuesday. The train left the station at 1pm.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s youngest sister Sheikh Rehana, her grandchildren, cabinet members, MPs, journalists and other dignitaries accompanied the premier.

While crossing the bridge, the prime minister said: “The rail link has been installed. We have built the Padma Bridge with our own funds as well. As a result, we, the people of Bangladesh, about whom Bangabandhu spoke, cannot be suppressed by anyone.”

She later thanked all those who have worked hard to build the Padma Bridge. She also expressed her gratitude to the Almighty.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday opened the train service on the 82km Dhaka-Bhanga route through the Padma Bridge.

Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan received the prime minister.

The remaining portion of the project linking Jessore is expected to be launched in June of next year, according to project officials.

On September 7, the trial run of a specialized train along the Dhaka-Bhanga route via the Padma Bridge concluded successfully.

Prior to this, Bangladesh Railway conducted a trial run from Bhanga to the Mawa end of the Padma Bridge on April 4, following the completion of the stone-less railway line on the bridge.

On October 14, of the preceding year, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction phase of the rail link connecting Dhaka and Jessore as part of the “Padma Bridge Rail Link Construction Project.”

The project is estimated to cost Tk39,246.80 crore, with the Exim Bank of China providing a loan of Tk21,036.70 crore.
