The first batch of fresh uranium, the nuclear fuel of the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, is being taken from Dhaka to the project area.

The vehicles carrying uranium crossed the Bangabandhu Bridge on the Dhaka-Tangail Bangabandhu Bridge highway around 9:30am on Friday.

Earlier, the uranium reached the border of Tangail from Gazipur around 7:30am. It left from Dhaka by road Friday morning.

Tangail Superintendent of Police Sarkar Mohammad Qaiser said that the convoy carrying uranium reached the border of Tangail around 7:30am. Later, the carrier was taken across the Bangabandhu Bridge under the special security arrangements of the district police.

Meanwhile, due to safety concerns caused by the fleet of uranium-transporting vehicles, bus service on the Dhaka-Pabna route has been halted since 5am.

Earlier on Thursday, the first batch of fresh uranium, the nuclear fuel of the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, arrived in Bangladesh.

The nuclear fuel was brought to Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka by a special plane from a factory in Russia, said Project Director Dr Shawkat Akbar.

This fuel is supposed to be officially handed over on October 5. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the event virtually.
