Violation of code of conduct: RO reports to EC against ruling party MP

The Returning Officer (RO) has sent a report to the Election Commission against Omar Farooq Chowdhury, the ruling party member of parliament (MP) of Rajshahi-1 (Tanor-Godagari) constituency, for conducting election campaign before allotment of symbols in violation of restrictions.

On Thursday (November 16), Awami League Member of Parliament Omar Farooq Chowdhury held a discussion meeting after changing the examination time of all the secondary schools of an union in Tanor Upazila of Rajshahi. The teachers of all the educational institutions of the union were called in the meeting along with various beneficiaries of the government. In the meeting, the MP asked for votes in favor of the symbol of Boat by promising the development of the area. Farooq Chowdhury even broadcast the program live from his own Facebook ID.

Shamim Ahmed, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Rajshahi District and Returning Officer of 12th National Parliament Elections, said that the fact is that he (MP Farooq Chowdhury) has been campaigning in violation of the Election Conduct Rules. As per the schedule, there is no scope for campaigning before the allotment of symbols on December 18. ‘I have sent a letter to the Election Commission mentioning the matter,’ he added.
